What is Ultrasound?

Ultrasound technology uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of internal structures. A small, handheld device called a transducer is used to send sound waves out and also to receive and record the sound waves when they bounce back. The sound waves used in 2D and 3D/4D ultrasound are the same. The difference lies in the sophistication of the transducer and the computer software within the ultrasound machine. Our ultrasound machine is a highly specialized computer that translates the returning sound waves into images for viewing on its computer monitor.

Is Ultrasound Safe?

Ultrasound has been used safely in obstetrics since the 1950. There are over 80 million ultrasound examinations performed every year in the US alone. There has been no confirmed adverse biological effects to mothers or their babies caused by exposure from ultrasound instruments. Many women have multiple ultrasounds during their pregnancy with no negative effect on the baby. For example, women having twins or triplets typically have an ultrasound every 4 weeks in the second and third trimesters. Women who are experiencing difficulty with pregnancy may have as many as 2 or 3 ultrasounds per week late in the third trimester.

See3D keeps ultrasound exposure to a minimum. Our equipment is certified by the manufacturer and complies with government regulations for use in obstetrical ultrasound. What are the advantages of 3D/4D ultrasound?

The dramatic, true-to-life pictures not only enhance the visual experience for expecting parents but also deepen the emotional bond with their unborn child. This connection has shown to improve the mother's personal wellness in her diet, exercise, quitting smoking and overall care that, in turn, affects the health of the baby. Parents-to-be also benefit from the reassurance of their child's well being which makes the pregnancy more enjoyable.

What is the difference between 3D and 4D?

4D ultrasound represents the difference between video and still photograph. Throgh this revolutionary technology, your baby's image is viewed like a live action.

Who will perform the ultrasound?

The ultrasound is performed by a safety trained and licensed ultrasound technologist who knows how to efficiently use our 3D/4D equipment to get the best possible images of your baby.

Is this procedure covered by my OHIP or my insurance?

Not all costs are covered by the client at the time of the procedure as this is an elective ultrasound for the purpose of bonding with your baby and obtaining images. We accept cash, Direct Payment, MasterCard or Visa.

What will determine the quality of the images?

Many factors are involved in obtaining clear images. We use state-of-the-art equipment and highly qualified technologists. We often find we are able to image even the most shy babies and we do our best under all circumstances. However, there are several factors outside of our control which will determine the quality of the images.

1. Fetal position: Some babies come ready for their close-up and seem to be posing at every turn. Others simply turn their back on us. Still others cuddle up to the placenta or uterine wall, or hide behind their hands (and feet). We know you particularly want to see your baby's face and we do all we can to encourage baby to turn our way. Particularly in 3D/4D
2. A straight-on face view is not very common. We urge you to enjoy the fun and sometimes funny positions your baby prefers rather than hold out for the glamour shot.
3. Maternal tissue: The more tissue the sound waves need to travel through, the less contrast the resulting images have. For this reason we often find we get better results with our fuller-figured clients later in their pregnancy for all imaging technologies--around 19+ weeks for gender determination and not later then 33 weeks for 3D/4D images. Again, you will get the best images possible, with the best equipment and technicians, but maternal tissue can be an important factor.
4. Fetal activity: It is fun to see the baby in motion in regular ultrasound and a little food or juice before your visit can assist in increasing baby's activity (no caffeine please). On the other hand, the best still 3D/4D photo results come when baby is asleep or still. Whether or not you have eaten, baby may sleep through the whole video, then set us on a chase for the 3D/4D portion. As always, we encourage you to enjoy your baby's activity and we'll do our part to work with your baby.
5. Gestational development: Babies are simply different. In 3D/4D, some babies are best seen at 20 weeks and others at 36, regardless of maternal tissue or other factors.
   

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. An appointment is required. Please call us to schedule an appointment several days in advance. Please note that weekend and evening appointments fill up quite quickly.

How many weeks along should I be at the time of the ultrasound?

The best time to get an image of your baby utilizing 2D ultrasound is after the 18th week (4 ½ months) of pregnancy. The best time for your baby's 3D/4D ultrasound is after the 25th week (6 months) of pregnancy.

Your session is initially recorded as a 2D ultrasound. When a clear image is captured, it is subsequently recorded in 3D/4D . Together, both technologies allow for a full picture of the baby's features and activity.

When will I receive the pictures and video?

Right away.
